Learning Language Center NOW OPEN
Unique Program Offers Multidisciplinary Approach to Helping Children with
Learning Challenges and Disabilities
According to the National Institutes of Health, research shows that eight
to 10 percent of American children under 18 years of age have some type
of learning disability. In its continued efforts to help children overcome
their language and learning difficulties, Casa Colina Hospital and Centers
for Healthcare recently announced the opening of its new Casa Colina Learning
& Language Center.
Cindy Sendor, MA, SLP and Director of Children's Services at Casa Colina
Hospital and Centers for Healthcare leads a team of licensed neuropsychologists,
speech language pathologists, occupational therapists and special educators
who provide children ages five and older, and their families with specific
interventions and strategies to help them identify and overcome their
learning challenges. The Center's team meets regularly and collaborates
with parents, public and private educators, and referring physicians to
address the student's critical needs and monitor progress.
"We have created a unique center that is unlike other tutoring programs
or learning centers in southern California," explained Sendor. "By
providing children both a warm and enriching environment, as well as the
latest diagnostic and treatment technology, they have an opportunity to
do more than find the answer to a math or reading problem. Here, they
learn how their own mind works best."
Learning disabilities fall into two categories - speech/language disorders
and academic/cognitive disorders. Casa Colina's Learning & Language
Center provides essential treatment options to help children with nearly
any type of learning challenge. If a child has not already had a comprehensive
evaluation, he or she will receive a 45-minute screening from a licensed
neuropsychologist. Depending upon the results, a specialist will conduct
highly detailed evaluations and develop a customized educational plan
with strategies to help each child develop new strengths. As a result,
students will learn more effectively and become more confident in the
classroom.
Casa Colina's Learning & Language Center provides a number of services
to support each child's unique learning needs. In addition to one-on-one
tutoring, small groups for areas that include handwriting, attention training
and homework success are offered. The Center also provides the latest
technology to treat children. This includes specialized computer software,
the Fast ForWord® Learning Program, and the Interactive Metronome System.
"While almost three million children in the U.S. receive special education
services through the public school system, we know that at least that
same number of students suffer from some level of learning and language
difficulty that may be undiagnosed," said Sendor. "By utilizing
our skilled professionals and advanced technology to provide children
with comprehensive evaluations and interventions, we can accurately determine
the cause of their learning difficulties, develop a customized plan for
how to best overcome them, and facilitate achievement."
The Casa Colina Learning & Language Center is a cash-based program
and, in some cases, insurance may provide coverage. Payment plans are
available. For more information or to schedule an appointment, please
