Proceeds to Benefit Casa Colina Centers for Rehabilitation
Casa Colina is honoring Lee Woodruff, wife of ABC reporter Bob Woodruff and co-author of the New York Times bestseller In an Instant, and traumatic brain injury survivor Marco Ferreira and his wife Wendy Tucker at its Tribute to Courage on Saturday, February 20 at Pacific Palms Conference Resort in Industry Hills. Hosted by film actress Bonnie Hunt, proceeds from the gala black tie event will benefit Casa Colina Centers for Rehabilitation’s programs and services including its nationally renowned Brain Injury Program.
Lee shared the struggles she and her family faced after her husband Bob suffered a traumatic brain injury while on assignment in Iraq in 2006. Together, they co-wrote In an Instant which chronicles their amazing journey following his return from Iraq. She not only worked tirelessly to ensure her husband received the care and support he needed throughout his recovery, but she also helped found the Bob Woodruff Foundation. Today, the organization assists wounded servicemen, veterans, and their families with obtaining the care they need to thrive physically, psychologically, socially, and economically.
When Marco’s motorcycle slid off the side of the road in Malibu Canyon in 2008, he was immediately flown by helicopter to the UCLA Trauma Center for life-saving treatment of his traumatic brain injury. He was initially admitted to a nursing home upon discharge from the hospital, but he was not progressing in his recovery as well as they hoped. Fortunately, his wife Wendy, a successful attorney, pushed to have him transferred to Casa Colina for more aggressive care that included acute rehabilitation, transitional care and day treatment. Marco, also an attorney, not only cheated death, but also defied the odds with his wife’s unwavering support and their steadfast commitment to his rehabilitation.
“We are truly inspired by the incredible courage, commitment and dedication demonstrated by Lee Woodruff, Marco Ferreira and Wendy Tucker,” said Dr. Felice L. Loverso, President and CEO of Casa Colina. “It is a privilege for Casa Colina to honor them at the Tribute to Courage because they exemplify the courage it takes to confront and overcome the tremendous obstacles that they were forced to face. By successfully engaging in the rehabilitation process they have turned tragedy into opportunity by increasing awareness about traumatic brain injury.”
In addition to the Tribute to Courage presentation, those in attendance will be treated to dinner, dancing, and live entertainment.
