Casa Colina Centers for Rehabilitation is pleased to announce that it will
hold a free seminar about Fibromyalgia, often known as "the invisible
illness." Casa Colina is uniquely qualified to present this special
evening program due to its many years of offering comprehensive medical
care and a Fibromyalgia Management Program and support group to the community.
Fibromyalgia is a complex chronic pain illness that is recognized by the
American Medical Association, the National Institutes of Health and the
American College of Rheumatology. Fibromyalgia experts estimate that about
10 million Americans and approximately 5% of the population worldwide
suffer with Fibromyalgia. While it is most common in women, the illness
strikes men, women and children of all ages and ethnic backgrounds. Fibromyalgia
can often interfere with routine daily activities and for those with severe
symptoms, it can be extremely debilitating.
Dr. Samy Metyas, a board certified physician specializing in fibromyalgia
at Casa Colina's Arthritis Center will lead the free seminar. He is
board-certified in Rheumatology and Internal Medicine and is a Fellow
of the American College of Physicians and American College of Rheumatology,
as well as a Certified Clinical Densitometrist. He is an international
speaker and has coauthored articles in such journals as
Journal of Rheumatology, Journal of Clinical Rheumatology, and
Annals of Rheumatic Disease. Also included in the presentation will be Dianne Whiting, MA, PT and
Manager of Casa Colina's Fibromyalgia Program. Topics of discussion
include effective management and treatment, lifestyle modifications and
exercise that improve symptoms, managing pain associated with the disease, and more.
This special event will be held on Thursday, May 12 from 6 to 8 pm at Casa
Colina's Tamkin Education Center, Building 1D, which is located on
the Casa Colina campus at 255 East Bonita Avenue (at Garey) in Pomona.
