Esophageal Motility Study

A diagnostic tool for swallowing and gastrointestinal disorders

Have you had difficulty swallowing food or liquids? Have you regularly experienced the discomfort of heartburn, acid reflux, or stomach pain? Is your doctor considering an anti-reflux procedure or a gastrointestinal diagnostic test that requires proper placement of pH probes? A state-of-the-art Esophageal Motility Study (also known as an Esophageal Manometry Test) will accurately assess the pressure and motor function of your esophagus (“food pipe”).

How Does it Work?

The Esophageal Motility Study will be performed at Casa Colina Hospital and Centers for Healthcare by a registered nurse with specialized training. In this short, minimally invasive procedure, a small catheter with tiny sensors will continuously record information as it travels from your throat to your stomach. As you are prompted to take deep breaths or swallow, this device will record changes in your esophageal pressure to create a detailed report for your physician. It requires no anesthesia. To ensure your comfort, you may be given a numbing spray or gel beforehand. Once the test is done, you may resume your normal daily activities, diet, and medications. You should also be able to drive yourself home.

The study will be read by a gastroenterologist, a medical doctor who is trained in the treatment of conditions that affect the esophagus, stomach, small intestine, large intestine, and biliary system. Casa Colina will collaborate with your primary care physician or gastroenterologist to provide detailed results and carefully evaluate your condition.
