Returning home from war with a traumatic brain injury (TBI) is devastating not only to the service member, but also to spouses, children,
and parents. The purpose of the Casa Colina’s Survive & Thrive project is to assist families in developing the understanding, skills and
hope that will help them achieve more fulfilling, stable lives.
Service members / veterans and their families will:
- Participate in educational and therapeutic sessions led by Casa Colina’s physicians, neuropsychologists, and therapists, all of whom have expertise working with traumatic brain injury
- Have time to speak with doctors and clinicians privately, one-on-one
- Develop new ways to communicate effectively and thrive at home
- Learn coping and family support skills
- Take part in activities led by the nationally renowned Outdoor Adventures recreational therapy team
- Have time to be together as a family and, for parents, have time to be together as a couple while children participate in their own separate program
Who
Each session will bring together 12 different families – Operation Iraqi Freedom (OIF) / Operation Enduring Freedom (OEF) era military
personnel with traumatic brain injury and their spouses and children or other family caregivers. All applicants will need to meet Casa Colina’s
eligibility requirements.
When
The first session of the camp took place October 26-30, 2009. The next session for 12 new families will take place in 2011.
Where
The event is held at the Alisal Guest Ranch in Solvang, CA.
Cost
Thanks to a generous grant from “Welcome Back Veterans,” an initiative of the McCormick Foundation and Major League Baseball,
this program is provided at no cost to appropriate service members / veterans and their families. All meals, transportation and amenities are provided.
