Casa Colina Hospital Deemed "Finest Rehabilitation Hospital Ever Surveyed" by Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare

Casa Colina Hospital Deemed "Finest Rehabilitation Hospital Ever Surveyed" by Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Pomona, California…The new Casa Colina Hospital has passed its Monday, August 8, 2005 survey with many compliments from JCAHO (Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations) surveyors. Numerical scores are no longer awarded during surveys but rather a "pass or fail" system is used.

"Above all, the national standards are intended to stimulate continuous, systematic and organization-wide improvements in an organization's performance and the outcomes of care," says Kurt Patton, executive director, Hospital Accreditation Program, Joint Commission. "The community should be proud that Casa Colina Hospital is focusing on the most challenging goal - to continuously raise quality and safety to higher levels."

Positive remarks were noted despite being the most comprehensive survey in the history of Casa Colina due to the opening of the new 68-bed acute rehabilitation hospital on March 5, 2005 and only the second survey of the Tamkin Outpatient Center and Casa Colina's Children's Services. The last JCAHO onsite survey occurred at Casa Colina Hospital on May 21 through 23, 2003. To earn and maintain accreditation, an organization must undergo an on-site survey by a JCAHO survey team at least every three years. Passing the JCAHO survey signifies total conformance with national guidelines.

Felice L. Loverso, Ph.D., President & CEO of Casa Colina, thanked his staff during an employee gathering in the new hospital cafeteria after the survey concluded on Monday. "You have represented Casa Colina during its finest hour - you have been compared to the best rehabilitation hospitals all over the nation, and you've come out on top." He announced that all staff would be given complimentary breakfast and lunch for the entire week. Also that nursing staff during evening shifts would receive complimentary dinner for the entire week.

Casa Colina chooses to undergo JCAHO accreditation for the following reasons:
  • Leads to improved patient care.
  • Demonstrates the organization's commitment to safety and quality.
  • Offers an educational onsite survey experience.
  • Supports and enhances safety and quality improvement efforts.
  • Strengthens and supports recruitment and retention efforts.
  • May substitute for federal certification surveys for Medicare and Medicaid.
  • Helps secure managed care contracts.
  • Facilitates the organization's business strategies.
  • Provides a competitive advantage.
  • Enhances the organization's image to the public, purchasers and payers.
  • Fulfills licensure requirements in many states.
  • Recognized by insurers and other third parties.
  • Strengthens community confidence.
Founded in 1951, the Joint Commission is dedicated to continuously improving the safety and quality of the nation's healthcare through voluntary accreditation. JCAHO's standards address the organization's level of performance in key functional areas, such as patient rights, patient treatment, and infection control, and the standards focus not simply on an organization's ability to provide safe, high quality care, but on its actual performance as well. Standards set forth performance expectations for activities that affect the safety and quality of patient care. If an organization does the right things and does them well, there is a strong likelihood that its patients will experience good outcomes. JCAHO develops its standards in consultation with health care experts, providers, measurement experts, purchasers and consumers.

The Joint Commission evaluates and accredits nearly 17,000 health care organizations and programs in the United States. An independent, not-for-profit organization, JCAHO is the nation's predominant standards-setting and accrediting body in health care. Since 1951, JCAHO has developed state-of-the-art, professionally based standards and evaluated the compliance of health care organizations against these benchmarks.
