Minimally invasive surgical option provides quicker recovery for patients
POMONA, Calif., Aug. 30, 2016 —
Casa Colina Hospital and Centers for Healthcare, a leading medical, surgical and rehabilitation service provider, today
announced the recent acquisition of the
da Vinci® Xi™ Surgical System for use in its new Medical Surgical Wing, which houses
three state-of-the-art operating rooms. The
da Vinci Xi System was designed with the goal of further advancing the technology used
in minimally invasive surgery. The System can be used across a spectrum
of minimally invasive surgical procedures and has been optimized for multi-quadrant
surgeries in the areas of gynecology, urology, thoracic, cardiac and general surgery.
By enabling efficient access throughout the abdomen or chest, the
da Vinci Xi System expands upon core
da Vinci features, including wristed instruments, 3D-HD visualization, intuitive
motion and an ergonomic design. As with all
da Vinci Surgical Systems, the surgeon is 100 percent in control of the robotic-assisted
da Vinci System, which translates his/her hand movements into smaller,
more precise movements of tiny instruments inside the patient’s
body. The
Xi System’s immersive 3D-HD vision system provides surgeons a highly
magnified view, virtually extending their eyes and hands into the patient.
Key features include:
- A new overhead instrument arm architecture designed to facilitate anatomical
access from virtually any position.
- A new endoscope digital architecture that creates a simpler, more compact
design with improved vision definition and clarity.
- An ability to attach the endoscope to any arm, providing flexibility for
visualizing the surgical site.
- Smaller, thinner arms with newly designed joints that offer a greater range
of motion than ever before.
- Longer instrument shafts designed to give surgeons greater operative reach.
“The
da Vinci Xi Surgical System at Casa Colina Hospital is the pinnacle of minimally invasive
surgical technology, providing superior optics, improved ergonomics, and
precise instrumentation. The result is smaller scars, faster recovery
and better outcomes for patients,” said Harry W. Ou, M.D., FACS,
a board-certified surgeon at Casa Colina.
The
da Vinci Xi System is an expandable technology platform that is designed to accommodate
and seamlessly integrate a range of current technologies as well as future
innovations in areas such as imaging, advanced instruments and anatomical access.
“We are proud to be among the first to use this innovative, minimally
invasive surgical technology in the Los Angeles market,” said Felice
Loverso, Ph.D., president and CEO of Casa Colina. “It is part of
our commitment to provide our community with the best possible healthcare
available, and the implementation of the
da Vinci Xi Surgical System in Casa Colina Hospital’s new Medical Surgical Wing
is a perfect example of this commitment.”

About Casa Colina Hospital and Centers for Healthcare
Casa Colina Hospital and Centers for Healthcare was founded in 1936 in
Chino, Calif., under the leadership of Frances Eleanor "Mother"
Smith and other community leaders and physicians to provide rehabilitative
care to children with polio. In the early 1950s, when polio was at epidemic
proportions, a plan was developed to build a new hospital in nearby Pomona,
Calif. In 1959, the new hospital was completed, and Casa Colina expanded
its physical rehabilitation services to concentrate on treating people
of all ages and disabilities resulting from neurological and/or orthopedic
conditions. In recent years, Casa Colina has renovated its entire 20-acre
Pomona campus to build a continuum of rehabilitative care unmatched in
the Western United States. Casa Colina was recognized by
Modern Healthcare in 2015 as the 13th largest rehabilitation provider in the country. Services offered to the
community include a state-of-the-art hospital offering acute rehabilitation
and medical surgical care, outpatient services, post-acute residential
rehabilitation care, children's services, adult day health care, specialized
physician clinics, diagnostic imaging, ambulatory surgery center, outdoor
recreation program, a medical office building, and more. The new Casa
Colina Hospital Medical Surgical Wing Medical opened to the community
on April 1, 2016. For more information, please visit
