Introducing the Learning & Language Center

If your child is struggling in school, he or she may need to have a learning and language assessment. At the Casa Colina Learning & Language Center, there is academic and language processing help for a variety of challenges, including attention deficit disorders, reading disorders, organization deficits, and other academic struggles. This unique hospital-based center is unlike any other tutoring program or learning center in Southern California. It offers a neuropsychologist-led team of clinical therapists and educators who provide children and their families with specific interventions and strategies to help students face and overcome their learning challenges and experience academic success.

The Center provides the latest technology to help uncover the cause of learning difficulties and determine how to best resolve them. It is a warm and enriching environment where children ages 5 and over have an opportunity to do more than find the answer to a math or reading problem.

We offer a variety of workshops for children. If you're not sure which one is right for your child because he or she has not yet had a comprehensive evaluation, a licensed neuropsychologist will conduct a 45-minute screening to determine which evaluations and/or services are recommended. Depending upon the results, a speech language pathologist, occupational therapist or the neuropsychologist will perform highly detailed evaluations and develop a customized educational plan to help maximize your child's academic potential.

The following workshops are conducted by pediatric occupational therapists, speech and language pathologists, and specialized educators:

Handwriting Workshop is for children 5 to 14 years of age who are struggling with the mechanics of writing. It will promote the development of posture, finger coordination, functional pencil grasp, and visual motor skills. This multi-sensory approach helps the student write properly, so he or she can focus on spelling, grammar, and composition.

Heads Up is a cognitive treatment program created for verbal children who are between the ages of 7 to 16 years, and have difficulty staying focused on and completing schoolwork. Practice strategies help increase attention, identify and reduce distractions, and seek assistance as needed. Compensatory strategies are trained to help the child or adolescent to monitor their own attention to task and make repairs as needed.

Interactive Metronome is an assessment and treatment tool used in therapy to improve the neurological processes of motor planning, sequencing and processing for individuals ages 5 years and older. This individualized program helps students improve focus, memory and sequencing/coordination. Children with language processing deficits will also improve auditory comprehension and expressive language competence.

Learning Together, Level 1 is for elementary school students and Learning Together, Level 2 is for middle/junior and high school students. These 8-week workshops are designed for those students who need a structured environment to learn compensatory strategies and complete weekly homework assignments. The workshops provide students with the tools they need to improve reading comprehension, written expression, math concepts, time management and basic study skills.

Homework Success is a drop-in program to provide continued support for those students who have already completed a structured workshop listed above. Lessons support continued gains in note taking, written expression, math strategies, organizational skills, time management, and child/adolescent specific needs.

Here, your child will learn how his or her own mind works best, and discover a capacity for learning that is greater than you ever thought possible.
