Spinal Cord Injury

Comprehensive care after a spinal cord injury

For more than 60 years, Casa Colina has been a leader in care for those recovering from spinal cord injury (SCI), offering one of the most comprehensive SCI treatment programs in the country.

Our care continuum spans the entire treatment and recovery process, including acute hospital rehabilitation, short-term residential rehabilitation and day treatment, home and community services, outpatient care, education and support groups, and more. Patients are admitted to the area of care most appropriate to their level of injury, and all services are customized to accommodate their unique needs.

Overseen by a physician certified in physical medicine and rehabilitation and supported by the Casa Colina Research Institute, our experienced clinicians and residents-in-training combine state-of-the-art methods with proven clinical pathways to help those recovering from SCI face the challenges of their injury, increase function, and improve their quality of life.

The Optimal Choice for Inpatient Rehabilitation

Treatment for individuals with SCI often begins in our hospital’s Joint Commission-accredited, 68-bed Acute Rehabilitation Wing. Here, patients receive at least three hours of intensive therapy a minimum of five days per week from our seasoned therapists, many of whom hold Neurologic Clinical Specialist certifications. Our clinical teams hold weekly meetings to track progress and plan the next steps of each patient’s rehabilitation.

Inpatient facilities include:

A Multidisciplinary Team

A board-certified physician specializing in physical medicine and rehabilitation directs each team of brain injury specialists. Teams may include:

  • Audiologists
  • Case managers
  • Internal medicine doctors
  • Neuropsychologists
  • Occupational therapists
  • Physical therapists
  • Registered nurses
  • Respiratory therapists
  • Recreational therapists
  • Social workers
  • Speech-language pathologists
  • Other specialists as needed

Transitional Living to Prepare for Home

Our Transitional Living Center (TLC) is a 46-bed, CARF-accredited treatment facility that offers individuals with brain injuries a bridge between acute rehabilitation and home. We provide residents up to six hours of individual and group therapy, six days a week, to help them build function and independence.

All care is overseen by a physician specializing in physical medicine and rehabilitation, and care teams include physical therapists, occupational therapists, speech-language pathologists, neuropsychologists, recreational therapists, nursing staff, case managers, and other specialists as needed. TLC clients have access to a range of services, including short-term residential rehabilitation, day treatment, and home and community care.

At the TLC, our focus is to provide functional real-world tasks while tackling challenges that clients will later face at home, in the community, or at the workplace. Programming includes community outings that provide our clients opportunities to practice skills in real-world settings and facilitate successful transition back into their daily lives.

Outpatient Services

Patients who are able to return home but still require rehabilitation care can take advantage of a wide range of outpatient services, including:

The Technology to Help Meet the Challenges

Casa Colina provides a range of assistive and rehabilitation technology to help our patients with spinal cord injury overcome physical challenges, foster independence, and regain function. Our experienced therapists work with patients to try different devices and determine which ones best support their rehabilitation goals.

Care that Keeps Family in Mind

We offer peer support and education groups for patients with spinal cord injuries and their families. Casa Colina also provides on-site housing, on a first come, first served basis, for families who have traveled from a distance to be near their loved one during the rehabilitation process.
