Transfer of Spatial Neglect: A Study of Awareness for Left Hemi-spatial Neglect
  • Category: Brain Injury, Stroke
Description of Trial:

What is hemi-spatial neglect?

  • Hemi-spatial neglect is a neuropsychological condition in which, after damage to one hemisphere of the brain is sustained, a deficit in attention to and awareness of one side of the field of vision is observed. It is defined by the inability of a person to process and perceive stimuli on one side of the body or environment, where that inability is not due to a lack of sensation.

What is involved with participation in this study?

  • You will be given a short cognitive test prior to performing a computer task, where you will be shown simple visual stimuli including dots, shapes, and cartoon faces. You will be asked to perform a discrimination or detection task and report by key press.
  • Approximately 2 hours for both cognitive and computer testing.
Scope Information
Scope:
The study tests the hypothesis that people suffering from left neglect will be unable to imagine other people processing their own left side of space. This study may be able to uncover fundamentals about how self-perception relates to social perception.
Applicable Diseases:
Left Hemi-spatial Neglect
Participating Institutions:
Casa Colina and Centers for Healthcare
Exclusion Criteria:
  • Participants over 18 years old with acquired brain injury (e.g., stroke and traumatic brain injury) that have been diagnosed with hemi-spatial neglect
  • 3 weeks post onset
  • Currently demonstrating symptoms of clinical levels of spatial neglect
