Breaking Barriers on the Field and in the Community: Inside Casa Colina’s "Beat the Heat 2026"
For individuals recovering from life-altering events like spinal cord injuries, strokes, or brain injuries, rehabilitation isn’t just about physical therapy inside a hospital—it’s about reclaiming independence and rediscovering the joy of movement out in the real world.
Recently, ABC7 News Anchor Tony Cabrera sat down with Lisa Hilborn, Casa Colina’s Director of Outdoor Adventures, Recreation Therapy, and Wheelchair Sports, to discuss how our specialized programs are helping adaptive athletes do exactly that.
Reclaiming the Joy of Adventure
At Casa Colina, we believe that a medical condition shouldn't sideline your passions. Through custom adaptive equipment and modified techniques, our team opens the door to an incredible array of activities. Whether it's the thrill of ocean fishing, the teamwork of wheelchair basketball and tennis, or unique experiences like outrigger canoeing and para-fencing, these programs are designed to get participants moving and connected.
As Lisa highlighted in the interview, the benefits stretch far beyond physical fitness:
Building Physical Confidence: Learning to navigate new environments and sports safely.
Fostering Deep Connections: Creating a supportive network of peers who share similar journeys.
Seamless Community Integration: Preparing adaptive athletes to thrive in public spaces, local events, and potentially even major stages like the Paralympics.
Be Part of the Journey
A shining example of this mission in action is our Beat the Heat 2026 event sports event, hosted right here in our local communities of Long Beach and Glendora. It’s a wonderful opportunity to see our athletes in action, learn more about adaptive sports, and witness the power of community firsthand.
Healing is a continuous journey, and adaptive recreation is where that journey turns into a life full of adventure.
