Pickleball, tennis, and paddle sports are more popular than ever, uniting people of all ages for friendly competition and exercise. These sports offer great physical and social benefits but also come with the risk of foot and ankle injuries. Fortunately, with proper precautions, you can keep playing the sports you love.

Quick movements, lateral shifts, and sudden stops involved in pickleball and similar sports put strain on the lower body, especially the feet and ankles. Common injuries include:

  • Ankle Sprains – A misstep or a sudden pivot can cause painful ligament damage.

  • Achilles Tendonitis or Ruptures – Repetitive stress or a sudden burst of movement can inflame or tear the Achilles tendon.

  • Plantar Fasciitis – Frequent stops and starts can lead to heel pain from inflammation.

  • Stress Fractures – Overuse or high-impact movements can result in small fractures.

  • Tendonitis and Overuse Injuries – Repetitive play without proper rest can lead to chronic pain and stiffness.

Many sports-related foot and ankle injuries can be prevented. Consider these tips:

  • Wear Proper Footwear – Invest in court shoes with good lateral support and cushioning to reduce impact on your feet and ankles.

  • Warm Up and Stretch – Stretching your calves, Achilles tendon, and plantar fascia before and after playing can reduce strain and improve flexibility.

  • Strengthen Your Lower Body – Exercises that build ankle stability and leg strength can help absorb shock and prevent falls.

  • Use an Ankle Brace or Support – If you have a history of ankle injuries, protective gear can reduce your risk of re-injury.

  • Listen to Your Body – Don’t ignore persistent pain or discomfort. Taking breaks and getting treatment early can prevent more serious conditions.

If you experience persistent pain or an injury, seek treatment. Foot and ankle specialists provide customized care through physical therapy, bracing, or advanced treatments like injections or surgical intervention. With the right approach, you can heal faster and return to the game stronger.

Take the proper steps to protect your feet and ankles, so you can enjoy the sports you love for years to come.
